BEARE PARK

AUSTRALIAN TALENT: GABRIELLA PEREIRA

Beare Park made their debut collection last season and we couldn’t be more excited about it. Gabriella Pereira, co-founder and creative director of the brand explains that her designs were inspired by confidence and practicality. She likes to mix luxurious garments with simplicity, and a neat feminine silhouette with an androgynous feel. “I think the collection holds both polished elegance and effortlessness, an aesthetic synonymous with Australian dressing”. Pereira says she finds her inspiration in nature and architecture – with a unique obsession for texture –and, last but not least, within her family “My parents are my muses, they have an unwavering commitment and enthusiasm toward their work and our family, which I find endlessly inspiring”.

What are the main inspirations behind the FW22?

The Beare Park debut collection is inspired by confidence and practicality. The garments present a luxurious approach to dressing with decisive simplicity. I think the collection holds both polished elegance and effortlessness, an aesthetic synonymous with Australian dressing.

The collection features a contrasting duality of androgynously relaxed tailoring with neat feminine silhouettes. All elements of the collection find harmony in the consistent use of ultra-luxurious fabrics and meticulous craftsmanship.

Who’s your muse for this collection and who has been in the past?

Rather than a person, textures found in nature or architecture are my muses for the collection. My decisions around fabric selections and shapes to be included in the collection are definitely informed by my obsession with texture. Tactility and quality of luxurious materials are central to Beare Park, and the design process always begins with fabric for me.

With regard to my career, my parents are my muses. They have an unwavering commitment and enthusiasm toward their work and our family, which I find endlessly inspiring.

Favourite fabrics and pieces?

Beare Park solely sources natural fibres for the creation of our garments. Fabrics within the debut collection include silk, cotton and wool.

I am particularly fond of our use of wool in classic shirting and dresses. Wool is a somewhat unconventional choice for these styles however the weight, drape and lustrous sheen of the superfine wool is unparalleled.

The silk georgette asymmetric top was also a runway highlight for me.

Who is the kind of woman you design for?

Beare Park is trendless, ageless and transcends traditional conventions involving fashion and its connection to gender. The garments are specifically designed for anyone who feels confident and comfortable in them. The brand’s intention is to empower through design and inclusivity.

I also design for myself, which I believe is a very genuine approach to the design process. This approach keeps the collection grounded in terms of wearability.

What is the best of the Australian fashion scene? And what would need to change?

The importance of sustainability in the Australian fashion industry is to be celebrated. However, I believe we will undoubtedly continue to learn and improve our sustainability practices. In the future, I hope complete transparency around production processes and related environmental impacts becomes standard for all fashion brands.

Australian Talent piece appears in the Fall Winter 2021 Issue 7.
